Controls Engineer

1. Summary

CoffeeTree Group is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, develop, implement, and maintain industrial automation and control systems. This role involves PLC programming, HMI development, SCADA integration, and troubleshooting to optimize equipment performance, improve operational efficiency, and support safe, reliable manufacturing processes.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in electrical engineering, industrial automation, and control systems, with the ability to collaborate with engineering teams and deliver effective solutions in customer environments.

2. Key Responsibilities

  • Control System Design & Development: Design, program, and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems for industrial machinery, equipment, and processes.

  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve electrical, automation, and control system issues to minimize downtime and maintain operational reliability.

  • Project Management & Implementation: Lead or assist with control system projects, coordinating with engineering teams, vendors, and contractors to ensure successful implementation.

  • System Integration & Testing: Integrate new automation technologies with existing equipment and perform testing to validate functionality, safety, and performance.

  • Documentation & Reporting: Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, PLC programs, technical documentation, and performance reports.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize automation processes, improve system efficiency, and reduce operational costs.

  • Technical Support & Training: Provide technical guidance, troubleshooting assistance, and training to operations and maintenance personnel.

3. Professional Experience & Requirements

  • Required: 3–5 years of professional experience in industrial automation, control system design, programming, or troubleshooting.

  • Experience working with PLC platforms, including Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar systems.

  • Experience developing, configuring, and maintaining HMI and SCADA applications.

  • Experience with robotics, motion control, or advanced automation technologies is preferred.

  • Familiarity with industrial networking and cybersecurity best practices is beneficial.

4. Education Requirements & Preferences

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • Preferred: Master's degree or advanced education in a related engineering discipline.

5. Required Core Skills

  • PLC programming and industrial automation.

  • HMI development and SCADA system configuration.

  • Electrical systems, instrumentation, and control system troubleshooting.

  • Industrial communication protocols, including Modbus, Profibus, and EtherNet/IP.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and regulations, including NFPA and IEC.

  • Control system integration, testing, and validation.

  • Technical documentation and reporting.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

6. Preferred Certifications & Licenses

The following certifications and credentials are valued but not required. Candidates are not expected to hold all listed certifications; however, additional relevant credentials may strengthen their qualifications.

  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP): International Society of Automation (ISA).

  • Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST): International Society of Automation (ISA).

  • Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley Credentials: Relevant training or certifications in PLC programming and industrial automation.

  • Siemens Automation Credentials: Relevant training or certifications involving SIMATIC PLCs and TIA Portal.

  • Functional Safety Certifications: Credentials related to industrial safety and automation systems.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License: A valuable additional qualification for candidates with advanced engineering experience.

7. Position Type & Work Environment

  • Employment Type: Full-time.

  • Work Location: Varies by client and project assignment, with most work performed onsite at customer manufacturing or industrial facilities.

  • Travel Requirements: Up to 50% travel may be required.

  • Schedule: Must be available to work overtime based on project requirements.
